The Biolistic pds-1000 /He gene gun system accelerates micron-sized particles of gold or tungsten coated with nucleic acid to the desired speed to introduce genes into cells, tissues or organs.This process does not depend on or act on the cell surface.The system USES a blast of high-pressure helium gas to propel a large plastic carrier carrying tiny particles in a disk toward the target cell.The helium pressure to propel the large particle carrier is determined by the different rupture disks used.A rupture disc is a plastic seal that can break under certain pressures.The termination screen prevents the carrier of large particles, allowing the particles to pass through and transfect the target cells.To improve the efficiency of this process, the chamber can be evacuated so that the pressure is lower than the atmospheric pressure, which can be reduced when the particles hit the target cells Less frictional resistance
